    User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Great for travel and meetings
I chose this ASUS to balance travel-ability (small and light) with screen size. This screen is large enough for 50+year-old eyes, so is better for me than the smallest netbooks. The touchpad’s pinch-zoom adjusts font size also. It goes to meetings and the battery has lasted 5-6 hours with multiple internet tabs open and 1 or 2 other programs running. I expect to like how it lasts the entire flight on a plane, too.

I still attach a larger flat screen monitor when at my desk so that I can work with two or three different programs. The keyboard is easy to use, nearly as wide as my ergonomic accessory model – it does not feel small at all.

I like that it came with Windows 7 and not a lot of “crapware” according to reviews, and I didn’t see much when I looked around for things to delete.

Lots of hard drive space at 250 GB, more than the smallest netbooks. The hard drive is partitioned into C and D drives. I’m still figuring out what to put where. But my programs seem to find everything they need to run smoothly. I was reluctant to do without a CD drive/burner (the smallest laptops don’t have one), so bought an external drive, but I haven’t used it yet (2 months), and probably won’t need it much.

I don’t do graphics-laden games, so can’t speak to that. This has everything I need for “office work.”

5 Stars Simply Outstanding in every way.
We’ve had this laptop for about a month or so. Right away we put in the extra 2 GB memory chip. This thing is very light & portable and blows away our desktop in terms of performance. Battery life is good, we typically get about 4-5 hours using the Windows 7 balanced power option. Windows 7 has been very impressive as well. The chiclet style keyboard has proven to be easy to type on.

Overall a great laptop & would most definitely purchase again & highly recommend.

    5 Stars Excellent laptop!
The ASUS UL20A-A1 is the perfect laptop for my use–email, web, household records, and photo editing. I was looking for a small, lightweight laptop with sturdy construction and a reasonable price. A netbook would be fine for surfing and email, but is too small and slow for photo editing with Photoshop. The UL20A is only slightly larger, but the display works fine for photos, etc. The processor is quite fast with 2GB RAM, and Photoshop runs fine (probably about as fast as Photoshop runs on any computer!) The Express Gate feature is great for quick connections, but I haven’t figured out all of the details yet!

The only cons I see are:

**CD/DVD ROM must be external (no internal drive is available, but the small size/weight of the laptop is more important to me than an internal drive)

**No PCMCIA slot (I know, outdated, but I still have a few cards!)

**No ASUS brand carry case is available, only non-OEM items. I’m not into brand names, but have found over the years that the OEM cases typically fit best and have the most useful features.

Overall, I am very pleased with the laptop, and would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a basic laptop that is fast enough to run most programs.

5 Stars Light as a netbook but tons more horsepower.
I was in the market for a new compact laptop. Looking at netbooks, the performance, even of the new Atom Dual Cores just was not going to cut it. I opted for a CULV processor and the size/weight/price of this bad boy made it a great choice.

5 Stars I have my brother to thank…
It was a toss up between the ASUS UL20A and the ASUS 1201N… My brother gently nudged me in the direction of the UL20A and I’M DELIGHTED he did!!! I am one happy sister! This little laptop is all the computer I need and more, in a very lightweight, sleek, classy aluminum topped shell.

It was fast and problem free right out of the box. Connected to my Wifi instantly, and runs cool cool cool! I assume it has a fan, but I’ve never heard it, even in an otherwise silent workplace.

The keyboard is very comfortable, sturdy and has the Home, End, PgUp & PgDn keys that I missed on my ASUS 1002HA. I love my 1002HA netbook, but this machine, in my opinion, is in a completely different class…

The touchpad takes a little getting used to… no edges, so it’s easy to get off-track, but only til you get the “feel” of it… now my fingers recognize the little indentations and it’s no problem at all. Some have expressed the label on the palmrest as being distracting, but I think it makes a good protector for the surface, at least on the right side.

The UL20A arrived with one 2G memory stick,(KUDUS ASUS!) I ordered a second 2G strip the day I ordered the laptop, (I like to have mulitple windows open at the same time) and intalled it 24 hours after I received the UL20A, and now it’s simply amazing! It was very easy, just remove 3 tiny screws, insert the memory strip into the open slot, and close it back up. (Please look up and follow the detailed mfr directions, check warranty info, etc.)

The display is brilliant! The glossy screen… well, because I use it outdoors a lot, I’ve ordered a non-glare screen protector and am optimistic that it will be what makes this my perfect laptop.

My online video watching was definitely improved with the second strip of RAM, but certainly sufficient with 2G. The screen size is perfect.. where I had difficulty with my multiple open windows, and my vision problems on the 10.1, I have all the room I need with the 12.1 display… Not sure why it works so much better, but it really does. I considered purchasing the 13.1 UL30A, until I was told that it’s one inch wider and no taller.

My initial test of battery time gave me a little over 7 hours of various types of computing… watching videos online using wifi, online research, offline word processing, using the ASUS external DVD player to watch a movie, tinkering around with Windows7, personalizing settings, etc.

I really didn’t think I was going to like the light aluminum color… My ASUS 1002HA is the dark grey aluminum, it’s really classy and professional looking, so I was disappointed that the UL20A didn’t have a choice of colors… In fact, I almost didn’t purchase it because of that.

However… I’ve changed my mind, I really like it! Would I choose the darker color if it were available? Yes. Would I not buy this wonderful little laptop for that reason alone? Not after seeing and experiencing it!

I certainly have no complaints, and am completely satisfied with my purchase. And most of all, I thank my brother for pointing me in the right direction for what I needed/wanted! And well, I need a new desktop for the office, He thinks perhaps an Asus Essentio…

Hope this helps someone, because I’m having a blast writing this on my new ASUS UL20A!

4 Stars Great Netbook, Some lingering power issues
I’ve been using this for about a month now, and I’m definitely satisfied with my purchase. It’s a fantastic netbook: Windows 7 runs smooth and fast, the chiclet keyboard is roomy and comfortable, and all the other major elements are polished and functional.

My issue with the NB305, is the battery life, not so much while the computer is in use, but when it is hibernating or sleeping. When you’re using it, the battery lasts a long time especially in so-called “eco mode” which adjusts the power settings automatically for maximum battery life, as opposed to maximum performance. Strangely, the issue I have with the battery, which is my only real gripe about the NB305 at all, is that it seems to drain inordinately large amounts of battery while it is in standby. If you simply close the screen when you are done with any given session, which I generally do, you’ll find the battery significantly drained if you open it back up a couple hours later. Even in hibernate, it seems to eat power. You have to go through shut down before packing it up, and then you will find it lasts much longer.

Obviously, this isn’t a deal-breaker, it just requires you to adopt that new (and probably good) habit of turning everything off before packing it up. Startup is quick anyway, generally less than two minutes, so it hasn’t been a huge problem. I still recommend this Toshiba, and don’t regret my decision at all.

5 Stars My first netbook; very carefully chosen
I have owned several notebooks and desktops in my lifetime; my most recent notebook gave out a few months ago after three years, and my desktop computer is a couple of years old but still holding strong. I wanted a netbook for portability and as a second computer option (in case the desktop is ever temporarily offline for any reason).

I started seriously looking at picking up a netbook last year, back when the n280 chip was standard. None of the netbooks at the time quite lived up to my expectations in terms of features and form. I decided to wait for the new chipset.

After quite thoroughly comparing over 15 different netbooks all running the new 1.66ghz Intel n450 chip, I ordered the Toshiba NB305-N410WH and after nearly a week with it I feel very comfortable with my purchase; it’s my new best friend. (For what it’s worth, the runner-up was the Asus Eee PC 1005PE-PU.)

I love the texture of the NB305 — it’s not glossy so it doesn’t stupidly attract fingerprints. I don’t usually like white things, especially for electronics, but this one carries well (I figured the white would go nicely with the beautiful silver keyboard) and I don’t see it getting dirty easily like most white things do.

I have installed more software than I expected a netbook to be able to handle, and it has managed my multitasking admirably. Occasionally I ctrl+shift+esc myself to check the task manager and manage whatever’s running up the CPU or RAM processes, but I do that even more often with big powerful desktop computers. Internet has been very snappy, and I have had zero issues with setup and ongoing connection.

I spent the $50 to purchase 2gb stick of RAM. I’m pretty sure that’s made a good difference, though the machine was keeping up quite well running multiple apps even on just 1gb of RAM.

I will probably pick up a $20-25 bluetooth usb adapter at some point.

The touchpad has been very properly responsive. Check the settings/update your synaptics touchpad drivers if you want to make sure to have the full featureset of gesture controls; I love them. Of course, as all the pro reviews have noted, the keyboard is excellent; it looks great and feels great.

The screen is really good despite its small size. The 1024×600 is better than I expected. For the most part, I’m (surprisingly) perfectly content not to be on a bigger screen (I’ve been otherwise used to a dual-monitor setup with monitors 21-24″, but I’ve felt no urge to connect the NB305 to an external monitor).

The sound quality of the speakers is rather weak; fortunately, sound quality with headphones plugged in is good and there are interesting/effective sound customization features that are easily adjustable.

I’m estimating my battery life so far to be at roughly 8+ hours at pretty much maximum performance (aside from my screen, which I like at ~4.5 brightness level even when plugged in).

I found Starter Wallpaper Changer, perfect little app that provides precisely what Microsoft shamefully blocked. I also found instructions online to change the background image of the login screen. So my netbook is now highly attractive both outside and in. :)

Though my desktop computer is still technically the more powerful machine, and I’ll certainly still turn to it for more hefty tasks, I’ve already been using my NB305 as a primary machine, and I see myself potentially using it more often than my desktop from here out.

I am very pleased with my NB305.

Now I’m on a quest to find the perfect case(s) for my netbook. (I want to be able to take it with me everywhere!)

5 Stars What a netbook is supposed to be!
I had been looking at the various netbooks for a while and really liked Toshiba’s NB205 but just couldn’t get around the negative comments on battery placement and speaker quality. The NB305 was specifically designed to address these concerns – different battery placement and two speakers instead of just the one on the 205.

As for things this shares with the 205: The chiklet keyboard just rocks – space between the keys goes a long way towards cutting down on the mistypes that you get on the keyboards where the keys are merging one into the next. It may not matter to many people but if you have a long haired cat or dog that sheds and likes to spend time in your lap the fact that this is a much easier keyboard to keep pet hair out of is a huge plus as well. Having two separate mouse buttons instead of one rocker bar is handy for those of us who like to actually use the right click. Keyboard layout as a whole is very “touch type” friendly so those who actually learned how to type on a real keyboard or -gasp- typewriter can actually use this keyboard. Portability is also another huge plus, when it’s closed this little guy doesn’t have much more of a footprint than a decent sized hard cover book and while I realize that this just means it’s a netbook as somebody who still remembers his high school computer lab having IBM PS-2’s it’s still amazing.

In an effort to make this a true review I’ll also hit a few of the things that are shortcomings for the NB305. Is this going to let you watch high def movies – no. Is this going to let you play World of Warcraft or other graphic intensive games – no. Are you going to be able to multi-task 5 different RAM intensive applications – be serious you only have 1G of RAM or 2G if you upgrade.

The reason I’m giving such a great rating to this netbook is that having said all of the things that the NB305 – and for that matter netbooks in general – can’t do the simple fact is that I don’t want to do and wouldn’t expect to do those things on a 10.1 in screen to begin with. If you want to play games there are laptops targeted for that market, if you want to watch HD video get a laptop with a blue-ray not something that doesn’t even have an optical media drive. You can get a laptop that plays games – full discloser I have one, handles HD video and/or serves as near “desk top replacements” and you can get them for not a lot more than you will spend to get the NB305, what you will not get is the portability. Personally I want something to check my email, check headlines on the web, watch the occasional You-Tube, do word processing, handle I-Tunes and allow me to use a Citrix client to access the work related apps on a server when I’m away from the office and still fit in my briefcase. This little guy fits the bill and looks good doing it – thanks Toshiba.

    4 Stars Would be Perfect
This absolutely would be the Perfect Computer if the Plastic wasnt so cheap. It doesnt feel cheap, but the silver finish below the keyboard is coming off in three places. ive only had this for about a month. Otherwise though, this is a great computer. I can squeeze 10 hours of battery life out of it and the keyboard is really great.

And or all you people out here that are annoyed about not being able to change your desktop background, google stardock MyColors and download it from the legit page. Its not Malware, and i have used it to change my background on starter many times.

5 Stars solid, and perfect for travelling as long as your expectations aren’t too high.
I’ve responded to a few reviews, but haven’t got around to reviewing the netbook myself, so I’ll throw my two cents worth in since I’ve now had it in my possession for about 12 hours. First of all, I decided to go with the N310 model because I hate chiclet keyboards and I love the color black, so that ruled out every other model. Another reason was that I had a windows 7 ultimate license doing absolutely nothing so I thought I would install it on this netbook using a usb flash stick after backing up the xp version that was already on it. I also installed a 2GB kingston memory upgrade the moment I got it because I knew windows 7, even though in my opinion is the best OS to come out of Microsoft, is still a bit of a memory hog in comparison to XP, so a fresh Windows 7 install, a bit of searching on the web for the drivers, 2GB’s of RAM and I was good to go. Just to let you know, had to go to toshiba’s U.K website for all the windows 7 drivers. The drivers are labeled internationally, so no problem if downloading for a U.S NB305. Other than that, everything works great under Windows 7 and contrary to what others are experiencing, pretty quick by netbook standards. The keyboard is a pleasure to type on, doesn’t feel any slower typing on this than on my Dell XPS M1330 and the touchpad’s size is perfect. The screen is really bright, kind of reminds me of the LED screen on the M1330 for being visually strong. I thought the 1024 X 600 size was going to be an issue, but it really isn’t. The size of the screen fonts are good for my eyes ( I ain’t getting any younger), so the 1368 X 786 screens that are floating about on some of the newer netbooks might have made everything too small and that would have been frustrating trying to make everything look bigger even though I was getting more real estate. Haven’t got around to checking the validity of the battery life, but I don’t see any issues where I would run out of juice. It looks like its going to be a great traveling companion because of its size, battery life and it’s solidly built. So, my advice for anyone thinking about buying one of these 10.1 inch netbooks, no matter what brand they pick, is buy 2GB’s of Ram right from the start, spend quality time learning how to do a fresh windows install getting rid of all the bloatware that comes with it which can slow things down big time. Also run it in high performance mode when watching videos. I’ve had no issues with Divx movies, youtube, Hulu full screen struggles a little, Mp3’s are no problem, and running a slingplayer app perfectly with no hiccups from a slingbox streaming a cable box 9500 miles away and also netflix sd streaming works great. Just don’t have huge performance expectations and you’ll come to love everything about these netbooks.

5 Stars Small Package, BIG Performance
So, you’re hesitant to get a netbook because it’s kinda tiny & therefore must be slow, weak & hard to read? Those were my initial thoughts on NETbooks when I first began looking into the possibility of buying one.

The iNTEL Atom N280 packs more punch than I had expected, and I’ve been building desktop systems for over 12 years. Sure, it’s no dual core processor, but it impressive nonetheless.

I got the Acer, based on price, hard drive size and the N280 processor. I got the netbook primarily to use at several locations around town featuring free WiFi access. Since I have dial-up at home,it’s occasionally advantageous to have something portable to hook up to faster service.

So what happens when you go on-line with the netbook? I was amazed at the amount of work I could throw at it before the system bogged down. I routinely open up a streaming audio link to an out-of-town radio station, then open up another browser tab (Firefox) to download new software, digital images, or whatever. While waiting for the bigger downloads, I log into my webmail and check for new messages. It may be pushing it to go ot to open up that Powerpoint presentation or Excel spreadsheet while running the other 3 tabs, but withing its’ limits, you can easily open multiple browser tabs without drastically affecting performance. Keep in mind that in the Maximum power saver setting you can expect the processor to function at reduced speed.

9 Hours of battery runtime?? Sure you can, if you use the battery saver power setting, but I find that on the Laptop setting, I can still squeeze out an easy 5+ hours of run time.

The screen is tiny, upon first glance, but is easily readable, and even at an outdoor cafe, it isn’t necessary to use maximum brightness in order to see clearly.

The ACER comes with 1 GB memory, and I simply grabbed one of the two 2GB’s outta my laptop and swapped. Laptop’s good with 3GB, and the netbook works better with 2GB. To wish for larger memory capoacity in a netbook would be nice, but most of them now on the market seem to have a max of 2GB.

Windows XP vs Windows 7? I prefer XP, since it takes up less hard drive space, and does everything I want it to. Win 7 is good for a laptop or desktop, but, IMO, not a real advantage in a netbook, and certainly worth paying more for – even if all your friends have it …

No CD/DVD player, !! Hey, it’s a netbook – go buy an external CD/DVD. If you plan on loading up your favorite software, you’ll need this handy option. And you really didn’t buy it to watch your DVD rentals on, did you?

The SD slot has proven to be useful, especially for downloading stuff to transfer to my desktop PC, or laptop.

Would I buy it again if I had the chance for a do-over? You Bet! Most of the netbooks have similar characteristics, and, for the price paid, this ACER has exactly what I need. You can pay more for some of the other brands and models, but you won’t get anything any better.

I gave it a 5/5 star rating, since, as a Netbook, it does exactly what it is intender to do, and more. It runs my printer just fine, and the scanner, too.

    5 Stars fantastic
For a first time netbook user this one was perfect. The set up was easy and simple. The webcam works great!!! and the battery life is fantastic! i was really happy with this tiny little computer, perfect for school and to take on the go

    5 Stars Excellent!
This netbook is very compact and fast at the same time, I highly recommend, the battery life is amazing! I only charge it once to two times per week, very convenient!

    5 Stars Good Buy
So after much searching and thinking, I ended up choosing the Acer Aspire and I’m very impressed. The battery life, weight, size and performance get 5/5, for me at least.

For someone who just wants a netbook to be online and get things done, I would recommend this one.

    4 Stars small computer
Hard to update Office to get outlook…Otherwise nice small computer. We have not tested battery length yet.

Very good, only problem has been that I have had to restore the wireless connection twice in one month

    5 Stars Acer Netbook
My husband and I purchased this netbook to take along with us when we travel and for vacations. We have used it everyday since it arrived. The desktop pc is seldom on. I loved having the Acer when I was hospitalized. It made the days go by quickly. It is so light weight and the screen resolution is of great quality. Best purchase we have made!

5 Stars Excellent netbook–But disappointed with Amazon’s customer service
This netbook fits my needs very well. Its great for air travel due to small size, light weight and long battery life. Keyboard is more than adequate. My gripe is with Amazon’s pricing policies. Within days after receiving the netbook, I noticed that Amazon dropped the price by about 10%. A call to customer service was met with a “that’s too bad for you” attitude. I asked the CSR to have a supervisor contact me. Never happened! I thought Amazon was better than that. Since then, I have used other vendors for purchases I probably would have made on Amazon where pricing was relatively the same. Loyalty is a two-way street.

4 Stars Acer 250 GB netbook
I read the reviews before I purchased this, did my research in the stores to look for the N280 thing and the wireless N instead of G (I think that’s right) – no local stores had the later stuff, so I went with Amazon. Thanks to those of you who are geeks out there for giving me the right letters and numbers to look for.

I LOVE my little netbaby. I have a free Bible software including several translations of the Bible (6-7 whole versions of the Bible), several commentaries, other study aids. I have an intensive commentary series by one author that comes off a DVD, including hundreds of books/articles, and that all fit nicely on there. I also got Windows Live Writer added, and am blogging on the public transport system traveling each morning and evening. The battery isn’t on the most economical setting, but I still get more than enough hours of work on it before I charge it back up at home. It boots very quickly and it ready to use after a minute or so, maybe less. I can quickly search a database with 6-7 Bible versions on it and have instant results. There is no problem accessing large databases quickly and efficiently.

I carry a larger purse, but this netbook fits in it in a neoprene sleeve. I love the portability, the tiny size, and yet I’m able to type as fast as a regular keyboard – I’m a legal secretary, and I can type as fast as I think. My fingers are wider than some, but there’s still room to type.

The only con is, when I’m typing an email on the internet it is very slow. I have to wait for the computer to catch up to me. It takes several seconds after a few letters. That is frustrating. That’s when I’m at home sending from our home wireless internet. I’m not sure if that’s the netbook or my dsl cable service. My older laptop didn’t do that. Maybe it’s a ram issue – I did upgrade to the 2 GB thing. But the Windows Live Writer works great for the blog and is able to keep up with my thinking, so it has to do with the internet component than just the netbook alone I’m guessing.

One thing my brother recommended was to choose wisely the security system – he recommended eSet as having a lower profile (files that use up hard drive) than other types. And after working on getting it to print to my wireless printer with Windows XP and Windows 7 computers, the Microsoft people said only run Windows 7 starter on it – it will bog down with the full version. So I’m guessing security software might do the same thing. Something to keep in mind.

5 Stars just what I was looking for…
I purchased this model after several days of reading review and research and I’m glad I’ve picked a right one. This was my christmas gift for my daughter who just entered a high school and wanted computer she could carry with her in her backpack. This model has very long lasting battery and window 7 works great without any of vista’s problems. It has been 2 months now since her school started and not once she wanted any help with the computer. I was initially impressed with the speed, fit and finish and the graphic. My daughter loves using the camera chatting with her friends while doing her homework. The skype and youtube works great. All in all I have no complaint about this model at all.
